In transforming from home to restaurant, remodeling has been confined mainly to installing a modern kitchen. The original dining room, drawing room, music room, and four rooms on the second floor which today serve as the main dining areas, have undergone only necessary modernization such as air conditioning, which enables you to enjoy the past with the comfort of the present.

Recently a small wing has been added on the west center of the building to provide first floor rest areas. Most ladies, however, still enjoy ascending the majestic stairway in the entrance hall which, since 1960, many Willoway brides have graced and on which they have paused to throw their bouquets.

The Evolution Of Hinsdale Hospital 1998(11/29) Chicago Tribune
Dr. David Paulson ministered to the poor with his wife, Dr. Mary Paulson, around the turn of the century at the Life Boat Mission in Chicago. He dreamed of establishing a country retreat where the sick could heal physically as well as spiritually. He believed in and advocated the Seventh-Day Adventist tenet of oneness of physical and spiritual well-being, according to a history provided by Hinsdale Hospital. A patient and businessman, C.B. Kimbell, made Paulson's dream possible by purchasing an old country estate in Hinsdale, then a half-day carriage ride from the city, for $16,000 in 1904. He arranged for Paulson to pay him back in 20 interest-free installments. The first patient was admitted to the Hinsdale Sanitarium in 1905. The sanitarium was spartan. There was neither hot or cold running water in the rooms nor any heat. The first patient was transported to the second floor of the wooden 15-room building on the property on a large dumbwaiter. Paulson's methods attracted patients from as far as Rome and India. Families were encouraged to stay near patients and often camped in tents on the grounds. In 1908, a new, larger sanitarium was built. By 1920, the facility was treating 1,295 patients a year. In 1953 a new 200-bed hospital was built, and wings were added in the '60s and '70s. In 1983, the name was changed to Hinsdale Hospital.
